Episode 6: High Caloric Diets & Associated Risks with Colorectal Cancer
Dave, Lee, & Nate discuss high caloric diets and the associated risks with cancer. Beginning the discussion, we examine the hormones ghrelin and leptin and their pathways in the body and what their functions are on satiety and hunger. Moving forward from there, we discuss the “new kids on the block”: Uroguanylin and Guanylin. In particular, we look at their paracrine effects on the large and small intestines, respectively, and the endocrine function of uroguanylin has on the hypothalamus and the subsequent effects on hunger and satiety. At the end, we give the summary of the effects these have globally on the body, as well as, the mechanisms underlying their role in tumorigenesis in the colon and rectum.
