Episode 1: Man “Cured” of HIV and Religion and Ideology in Society
In the inaugural episode of Dr. D’s Discussions, Nate and Dave examine the claim of a man in the UK being cured of HIV followed by a discussion of religion and ideology in human society and history. We begin the discussion with describing that HIV is a lentivirus and how it infects T-cells. We include a description of what T-cells do and how they are formed. The discussion then goes into the stages of HIV infection from acquisition, latency, and finally AIDS. The discussion then leads into what the difference between lytic and latent viral states, and how those contribute to the viral infection’s spread in the host. Finally, we discuss the treatment of the UK man that was “cured” of the virus. We go into detail about the thre pronged approach of standard retrovirals, Vorinostat, and using another virus to increase the immune response.
The second half of the discussion pertains to religion, ideology, and human society. We look at the history of religion, how it can be detrimental to society, and its benefits to society. We take an objective view on why it developed and why it is falling out of favor in modern society.
