Episode 2: Three Parent Child and Diversity in the Workplace
We discuss the child born the 3 parents in the UK via IVF and mitochondrial Spindle Transfer techniques in the first half of the show. We begin by discussing how the mitochondrial genome is passed from mother to child, and the effects this has on offspring with defunct mitochondrial DNA. We go into further detail about how in vitro fertilization works, and how that technique is adapted to the case used in the United Kingdom by using a Spindle Transfer of the nucleus from the mother’s egg into the egg of the mitochondrial donor. We end the discussion on the ethics of the technique and the future direction of similar treatments.
In the second segment, we discuss diversity in the workplace, and how it can substantially help with problem solving. We break down the benefits of including people of highly diverse backgrounds into your company because they bring new perspectives to the table on problem solving. This diversity is not just race alone, but it includes educational background, the location of the education, where you are raised, and if you come from a hard upbringing. We give examples to illustrate our points throughout the discussion.
