Stem Cells: Types, Spinal Cord Injuries, Cancer, & Controversy
Dave, Lee and Nate discuss what Stem Cells are and how they could potentially be used to treat human ailments. We begin the discussion by defining totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent, and Embryonic Stem Cells in approachable terms. The discussion then turns to spinal cord injuries, mouse models of the disease, current clinical trials, and future directions. After that, we discuss what cancer stem cells are and how they relate to the disease and relapse of the disease after primary, or first round, treatments. We end the discussion on the controversy of using Embryonic Stem Cells in research in the United States.
