Episode 12: Theory Defined and Evolution Explained
In this very special episode, Dave takes the topic of Evolution on SOLO! He begins by describing the difference between scientific definition of theory versus the layman’s definition of a theory. He then goes into the fundamental organization of life in the 3 domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukaryota. He describes the foundation of life as being built upon the first organisms and the genetic basis for this by gene duplication of gene families. He gives the basis for a multicellular body by describing the Homebox, or Hox genes and their function. He further illustrates the point of gene duplication and gene families by examining the Globin protein families’ evolution through time, and how it relates to the organism level of evolution. Finally, he wraps up the discussion by looking at the evolution of animals with a special emphasis on Human Evolution.
