Episode 16: Metabolism and Metabolomics
In this week’s episode, Lebaron and Dave discuss the importance of Metabolomics and Metabolism to the future of the biomedical sciences. We begin the discussion by defining what metabolism is and giving examples of the build up and breakdown of proteins, DNA/RNA (nucleic acids), and lipids. We then define what metabolism, anabolism, and catabolism are and how they relate to one another. The next portion of the segment goes into the complexity of what metabolomics studies in terms of the shear volume of metabolites, the transient nature of metabolites, and the shortcomings of the technology. Further, the discussion breaks down the way in which the information coming from the field can be used in conjunction with genomics and proteomics. The ending segment of the discussion goes into cancer metabolism, why the alkaline diet is nonsense, and how this field could help elucidate new biomarkers and insights into the progression of cancer.
