Episode 18: What is Cancer?
In this week’s episode, Lebaron and David discuss “What is Cancer?”. We go through the hallmarks of cancer as present by Douglas Hanahan and Robert Wienberg in Cell 2000 and 2010. We go into the details about what are the hallmarks of cancer and define them in a way that is approachable and understandable for the layman. Sustained Proliferative Signaling, Evading Growth Suppressors, Resisting Cell Death, Replicative Immortality, Inducing Angiogenesis, Activation Invasion and Metastasis, Genomic Instability and Mutation, Tumor Promoting Inflammation, and Evading Immune Destruction are all covered and defined in the simplest of terms. We end the discussion with a simple analogy as to why there is no “cure for cancer” by bringing all the points discussed throughout the show together.
