Vaccines: Herd Immunity and NO Autism (Ep 19)
In this week’s discussion, Lebaron, Rosa, and Dave take on Vaccines and Herd Immunity. The discussion begins with a basic overview of the Immune System where the panel describes the 2 main arms of the immune system: innate immunity and adaptive immunity. This brief overview will set the stage for the audience to follow how vaccines work with the body on a cellular level to prevent future disease. We then dive deep into herd immunity, R(0), and vaccines effectiveness to give the audience a clear picture on why immunization is required. We then take the “Vaccines cause Autism” Myth head on with references from the CDC, FDA, WHO, and peer reviewed analyses. Rosa provides a clinical perspective on the schedule for vaccines, while Lebaron and Dave give a more molecular take on vaccinations. Overall, we try to point out that vaccines, and thimerosal, do not cause autism by presenting the sheer volume of children in studies that disprove the Wakefield study from 1998.
