Genetically Modified Organisms (S2 Ep1)
In this week’s discussion, Lebaron and Dave take down the misinformation regarding GMO’s including but not limited to: safety, efficacy, economics, and the underlying science in creating GMO’s. We begin the discussion by going into how GMO’s are made. In the case of agricultural products, we talk about the two main methods (Gene Gun or Bacterial insertion of a vector) in designing plants with desirable traits not normally found in those species. The episode then turns to transgenic organisms such as mice and rats used in scientific research and drug development. We go into the details about what a transgenic organism is and how to manipulate embryos into creating the model organism needed to solve a scientific inquiry. We then move onto the safety of GMO’s for consumption and for the environment. The discussion moves forward with us putting forth the scientific literature and meta-analyses that conclude that GMO’s are indeed safe including the reduction in insecticides directly related to the use of GMO’s in developed and developing countries. We finish the topic by comparing the positive economic impacts with neutral and negative outcomes. In particular, the papaya industry in Hawaii is a focal point of the benefits to using GMO’s, and how they can save an industry from collapse due to viruses and bacterium.
